Time’s Running Out!

The Gun Blogger Rendezvous is fast approaching – September 8-11. Gun rights lawyer extraordinaire Alan Gura will be joining us again. He will be joined by Chuck Michel, the attorney who successfully defended 16 year-old Gary Tudesko who was expelled from California’s Willows High School when unloaded shotguns were found in his pickup truck which was parked off-campus. Mr. Michel will be speaking about this case at the Saturday dinner.

Sponsorship this year is awesome!

And Bea!

This should be the best Rendezvous ever!

33 Days ’till the Rendezvous

The sixth annual Gun Blogger Rendezvous is only a month away, and there’s even more stuff to win this year.  In addition to the Ruger Blackhawk that Bea is donating, Ruger is also donating another firearm to be determined,  Glock has donated a certificate for any standard Glock pistol, MKS Supply will probably be donating another Hi Point Carbine (they’ve donated a firearm to the Rendezvous every year since its inception), and I have been informed by email that Weatherby is donating a PA-08 pump-action shotgun.  That’s at least four and possibly five firearms, and more may be coming.

But not only firearms will be given away in Saturday’s raffle.  Leupold is donating one of their VX-R Patrol scopes and a couple of game trail cameras, Pro-Ears is donating one of their electronic ear muffs, Woolrich is donating about a thousand dollars worth of their tactical clothing to one lucky winner, and there will be the usual other goodies like AR-15 magazines, range bags (Brownell’s makes a damned fine range bag), t-shirts (I’m bringing two Kalashnikitty shirts donated by the maker and one S&B “bullet” vacuum-packed shirt I got at Bulletfest 2011), cleaning supplies, lubricants, and more!

In addition, you can hob-nob  with (and shoot beside) celebrities like Alan Gura, Smith & Wesson sponsored shooter Molly Smith, and possibly stars from the first season of Top Shot.

And remember, it’s all for a good cause:  Project VALOUR-IT.  Here’s the founder, Maj. Chuck Zeigenfuss talking about how Project VALOUR-IT came about:

Chuck has attended two Rendezvous, but won’t be able to make this year’s since he is currently stationed in Hawaii.

We’ll be shooting Friday, Saturday and Sunday again this year.  Friday will be “shoot what ya brung,” Saturday will be Steel Challenge, sponsored in part by Sig (which ought to be very interesting!)  Sunday once again will be Cowboy Fast Draw.  Here are some videos from previous Rendezvous:

You don’t have to be a blogger, readers are more than welcome!  So scrape your pennies together, make your reservations and come enjoy a great weekend with a great bunch of people.  Gun Blogger Rendezvous VI is coming!

RENDEZVOUS!

It is now precisely two months before Gun Blogger Rendezvous V6.0. This one promises to, once again, top all previous versions.

This year’s festivities run Sept. 8-11, once again in Reno, Nevada, and once again the official hotel for the event is the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino, which happens to be physically connected to Circus Circus and the El Dorado.

I’ve attended all five previous events, and I enjoy the hell out of them. Some of the previous attendees include:

Guest of honor this year will once again be Alan Gura – yes, THAT Alan Gura.  And there may be other celebrities as well.

Rendezvous sponsors have included:

And, as has been the tradition, the swag promises to be epic.  The raffle Saturday night promises to have at least three and possibly four firearms.  There will be t-shirts galore (Eric Field donated two Kalashnikitty shirts for this year’s event, and I’m pitching in a Sellier & Bellot shirt, still in its unopened bullet-shape), AR-15 magazines, and many, many other really neat items.

But the main reason to go is the reason I go:  To talk to the people I read, and who read me.  This isn’t like the NRA annual convention where every moment of every day is tied up with events.  No.  While there are daily planned events, the majority of your time is available to just shoot the breeze with the other attendees, whether in the hospitality room or on the firing range.

Oh, and there will be shooting.  An open range day, a Steel Challenge day, and a Cowboy Fast Draw day.  Everything I bring will be available to anyone to shoot.  I’ll bring plenty of ammo.

Finally, we do this every year to raise money for an outstanding charity – Project Valour IT.  Your $30 registration fee and anything you spend on raffle tickets goes to buy voice-activated laptops and Wii video games for our wounded soldiers.  Last year we raised $5,100.  This year I hope we do better.

So scrape your pennies together, send in your registration form, make your travel and hotel reservations, and join us for a terrific weekend of gun-nut goodness!

Some Good News

I’ve been going to the Gun Blogger Rendezvous for the last five years, and all that time my Arizona CCW permit has not been recognized by Nevada.  That’s about to change:

Out of State Carry Concealed Weapon Permit Recognition

*Effective July 1, 2011

In accordance with NRS 202.3689 (effective October 1, 2007) the State of Nevada will recognize the following States’ CCW permit holders:

Alaska
Arizona*
Arkansas
Kansas
Kentucky*
Louisiana
Michigan
Missouri
Nebraska
New Mexico
North Carolina
Ohio
Tennessee
Rhode Island
West Virginia

This law allows holders of valid permits from these states to carry a concealed weapon while in the State of Nevada. The permit must be in the possession of the issue at all times while carrying a firearm.

Now THIS is Interesting

Breda posted recently about Luckygunner.com‘s use of “gunbunnies” at the recent Bullet Fest event, linking to an interview with Brian Crane.  Completely unrelated to her topic, here’s something I found very interesting:

Brian: I have an arrangement with them which was essentially tied to how the marketing of the business did. That’s going to be off the record what that actual arrangement is. Needless to say, I became one of the co-founders and they said, “Brian, go do our online marketing. Figure this stuff out.”

Andrew: So what’s the first thing that you do, Brian? You come in there, they put all this on your shoulders. What do you do?

Brian: Immediately start reaching out to the bloggers. So in our particular space, you had just a ton of sites that all had really solid back link profiles. I’d say there’s probably at least 100 active bloggers that have page rank five sites where they’re talking about guns. You start reaching out to them and working with them to promote Lucky Gunner through their sites. Holistically from a marketing standpoint, you want to get that community of influencers pushing us to their . . . twofold, to their actual readers but then also linking to us because it was building our back link profile very quickly as well.

I think the tipping point was essentially there was an event called the Gun Bloggers Rendezvous and not to go into a lot of details, but the Gun Bloggers Rendezvous does a raffle where they give away a bunch of stuff as part of this raffle and they were selling tickets online. And they were using PayPal as the channel for selling these tickets. And PayPal came in and said, “This has to do with guns. We’re going to shut you down.” They cut the raffle off in the middle of it. They essentially removed the component of being able to sell the tickets in the middle of this push to do the raffle, and so we stepped in and we were the back end for those raffle ticket sales. And that introduced us also to a much bigger community of these gun bloggers because people were like, “Awesome. You guys are helping out. Screw PayPal. We hate PayPal.” It’s an interesting space just because people are like . . . it’s a very combative stance because the tech companies don’t really get or like firearms.

Andrew: I saw some blog posts about you and with you on that issue. So apparently it was really heated, and you got a lot of attention and as you say a lot of props for coming in and helping out.

According to the interview, Luckygunner.com was in business for two months before he was brought on board. During that two months they were moving merchandise at a rate of about $250k per year. At the end of the year they’d done $3.2 million in sales.

Brilliant marketing move! And I was quite happy about it, myself.  Thanks again, Brian!  I’m glad we were able to help out a new company.

Damn the Economy! Full Speed Ahead!

Or:  A 3/4-Life Crisis Ought to be Good for Something.

I now have a car payment again.  Having lusted after one since they hit the market, I am now the proud owner of a 2011 GT Mustang.  It looks very much like this one:

(click to embiggen)

Kona Blue metallic, it has the 5.0 liter 412Hp engine, six-speed manual transmission, 3.55:1 rear-end ratio, Brembo brake package with front shock tower brace, and it’ll flatten your eyeballs when you mash the GO pedal.

I averaged 22.9 mpg on the way home from Scottsdale.

I bought it used, with 1850 miles on the odometer.

I am really looking forward to the drive up to Reno this year.

GBR-VI is Coming

Now for more original-content-free blogging, a reminder that the sixth annual Gun Blogger Rendezvous is coming up April SEPTEMBER 8-11, 2011 in Reno, Nevada.  Registration is now open.  Sponsors will again include:

  • The National Shooting Sports Foundation
  • Brownell’s
  • Hi Point Firearms
  • Ruger
  • Glock
  • Others, to be announced

If you want to go, but can’t afford the air fare, I may be able to help. I’ve got $400 worth of air travel coupons from Delta that I otherwise cannot use. Unfortunately, Delta makes actually using these as difficult as possible. I can use them to book a flight for someone else, but I have to make the reservation by phone with a Delta ticket agent, and pick up the tickets myself at the Delta counter. And, of course, I don’t get the cheap travel rates you can get off the internet when I do this. But if you want to go, drop me an email (my address is on the left sidebar) and we’ll see what we can work out. You don’t have to be a blogger, you can be a reader who just wants to meet us and our special guest, get to shoot some guns, eat some pizza, have some great conversation, and take home some terrific swag, and maybe get a new gun out of the deal.  Last year included a Hi Point carbine, a certificate for any standard Glock, and an air rifle, not to mention a Leupold scope, a set of LaRue Tactical rings, a set of Crimson Trace lasergrips and a bunch of other great stuff.  This year we will have a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in .45LC/.45ACP at a minimum.  I’m expecting at least three other guns.

Maybe this year, I’ll win one.

Each year has been bigger than the one before.  (I know, I’ve been to all five.)  Sign up and come on out.  It’s a great way to spend a long weekend.

I Live Too Damned Far from Knoxville

Full-auto goodness?  With free ammo

Lucky Gunner is putting on a blogshoot in Knoxville, TN over the Memorial Day weekend.

I may have to re-think my idea of flying someone to Reno for Gun Blogger Rendezvous VI.

On second thought, maybe not. United wants over $700 to get to Knoxville.

Damn.

UPDATE, 3/9:  Best.  Birthday.  Present.  EVER.  (Except maybe for the D.C. Circuit Court Parker decision of 2007.)  USCitizen has comped me airline tickets to Knoxville.  I’m GOING!  See you there!

GBR VI – Wanna Go?

Ok, the dates for the sixth annual Gun Blogger’s Rendezvous have been set, Sept. 8-11, 2011.  The venue is again the Silver Legacy hotel and casino in Reno, Nevada. I’ve been to all five so far, and I don’t plan to miss this one.

Last year’s schedule of activities will give you some idea of what to expect if you’ve never attended one of these, but bear in mind that for most of us, the reason to attend is to get together in person with people we know and like on-line, and have long, uninterrupted face-to-face conversations about the things we care about and find interesting.  Oh, and we get to shoot a lot, too.  Not to mention, EAT a lot.

Plus, there’s great swag to be had, provided by the heavy hitters in the firearms industry.  Last year Midway USA gave us pistol pouches and other neat stuff (cups, hats, shirts etc.), Brownell’s donated another of their very nice top-of-the-line range bags, lots of AR-15 magazines and other stuff.  The National Shooting Sports Foundation bought us pizza dinner one night, and the NRA bought us breakfast one morning.  Glock gave away a certificate good for any standard handgun, and MKS supply gave away a 9mm Hi Point carbine.  Para-USA gave away a 35%-off discount certificate for one of their handguns.  Crimson Trace donated a certificate for one of their products, and there was much moreWe raised $5,088 for Soldier’s Angels’ Project Valour-IT.

This year is shaping up to be as good or better.  Our oldest attendee, Bea, who first attended GBR IV in the company of her grandson, came back last year because she had so much fun.  Her grandson couldn’t make it, so she twisted her son’s arm and made him bring her!  Bea shoots .22 and .45 Ruger revolvers (and anything else you put in her hands) and reloads for her .45 Blackhawk.  She and Ruger’s representative Lori Petoske got along great, and Bea has convinced Lori to convince Ruger to donate a convertible Blackhawk for this year’s Rendezvous.  You’ve got to read that story.

Year before last, I donated a Para GI Expert 1911.  (2009 was berry, berry good to me.  Until December.)  Last year, I donated a set of La Rue QD rings.  This year all I can donate is $400 worth of air travel to the Rendezvous.  If you want to come, but the air fare is going to be a problem, let me know.  I’ve got $400 worth of travel vouchers from United Airlines.  United makes actually using these vouchers as difficult as possible.  You have to book the flight over the telephone – no internet booking – and they charge a premium for doing it that way, but tickets purchased with the vouchers can be in anyone’s name.  I just have to be the one picking them up at the United counter, since it’s my name on the vouchers.

You have to be SURE you can make it.  Tickets purchased with these vouchers are not refundable or transferable (see what I mean about making it difficult to use them?)  If the tickets cost more than $400, I cannot pick up the difference.  If you can, great, but we’ll have to figure out how to handle that.  Contact me at the email address on the left sidebar (<—— ) and tell me your story.  If I get more than one person interested in going, I'll review and compare your stories and your ticket prices and make a selection.  All decisions are final.  But the earlier we get the tickets booked, the less they should cost overall.  I'll wait until the end of March or so before making a decision (and there will be follow-on Rendezvous posts linking back to this one in the mean time).

You don’t have to be a blogger to attend.  Readers are more than welcome.  I really hope to see the biggest turnout ever for a Rendezvous!
