OK, Now that Photobucket’s Back Up: Cartoons!

Let’s abuse my bandwith privileges again and see what some of my favorite political cartoonists have to say about RatherGate. First up, the LA Times‘s Mike Ramirez with the “black eye” image I’ve been expecting:

Next, AOL News’s Bob Gorrell, with the correct understanding of the situation:

I said the same thing as Robert Arial of South Carolina’s The State: Just keep giving Dan the rope, he’s making the noose and stepping onto the trap door.

Interestingly, several cartoonists have jumped on the Watergate/Nixonian meme, such as Gary Varvel of the Indianapolis Star,

Larry Wright of the Detroit News,

Chuck Asay of the Colorado Springs Gazette,

and Doug Marlette of Tribune Media.

But Kirk Walters of the Toledo Blade cuts right to the heart of the matter:

CBS has burned what credibility they had by continuing to defend obvious forgeries and refusing to admit what those forgeries mean to their campaign smear story.

Note: I didn’t do a cartoon collection on the sunset of the “Assault Weapons Ban” because I really didn’t feel the need for a RCOB™ moment hour.

In Relation to RatherGate,

Remember back in April when PressThink did the story on Bush’s dismissal of the Mainstream Media? Specifically, this quote?

And the reporter then said: Well, how do you then know, Mr. President, what the public is thinking? And Bush, without missing a beat said: You’re making a powerful assumption, young man. You’re assuming that you represent the public. I don’t accept that.

And with good reason, sir. With good reason. I commented on this in a piece entitled He Really Doesn’t Do Nuance, and quoted this bit, too:

That’s his attitude. And when you ask the Bush people to explain that attitude, what they say is: We don’t accept that you have a check and balance function. We think that you are in the game of “Gotcha.” Oh, you’re interested in headlines, and you’re interested in conflict. You’re not interested in having a serious discussion… and exploring things.

And what do we have here in September? CBS playing “GOTCHA!” Only it’s backfired on them.

Go back and read this piece, too, where I reproduced some of the more, um, interesting comments from the blogosphere over that PressThink piece.

No Pictures

If you’ve been looking recently, you’ve probably noticed that my picture links aren’t working. It looks like Photobucket had a major hardware failure. I don’t know yet if my account is going to be restored, or if it was all lost.

Oh, well. What do you want for free?

Quote of the Week of the Day™

This time from Varifrank:

Has it occured to anyone else that the generation that lost Vietnam the first time is now in the process of metaphysically losing it a second time? Was there something in the water when the “greatest generation” came home to breed that helped produce a generation of narcissistic, whiny pathetic and perpetual losers? Is this the true effect of flouridation?

Good question.

UPDATE, 9/19: Connie du Toit comments on the Selfish Generation™

Why the CBS Document Scandal is Important

As I noted in my missives to Professor of Journalism Ethics Edward Wasserman, the problem we, the “loud and bullying sliver of the audience” have with the Mainstream Media is that they’re no longer reporting facts, but instead are deliberately, and increasingly blatantly trying to tell us what to think, how to think, and when to think it. They’re manipulating us every bit as obviously as Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, yet they still think they are hiding behind a curtain of pure objectivity.

Well, Connie du Toit put the matter in stark perspective, as Les Jones noted in a recent post.

The fact that we’re arguing over issues in Iraq (if we should be there or not, if it is going well or as planned or not) also is very much related to the same issue. Has the MSM been leading, suggesting, inferring, selectively reporting, or outright distorting the issues in Iraq? Many of us on the right side of the aisle believe that the press has been doing that. We’ve never had such blatant proof of their partisanship before.

It’s not a separate story. It is not irrelevant in the grand scheme of the more important issues. If we’re deciding issues based on what the press tells us, and the press is a fraud, then on what basis can we discuss anything?
Posted by Mrs. du Toit September 15, 2004 02:10 PM

If you read the blogs, you know that the MSM is reporting only the horrific. Anything positive must nearly be dragged out of the newsrooms. The media is repeating its Vietnam experience – doing everything it can in an effort to, in its view, extract us from our self-inflicted quagmire. Dan Rather’s self-immolation is providing a light with which to illuminate this fact. As I told Mr. Wasserman, we no longer trust the media because they no longer deserve to be trusted. As Connie points out, if we don’t have reliable information, how can we make considered decisions?

Burn, Dan, burn. Burn brightly. Maybe something good will come of it.

This is so Accurate (but not AUTHENTIC) it HURTS.

Stolen shamelessly from Free Market Fairy Tales. Read it and weep:

AMERICANS WITH NO ABILITIES ACT PASSES CONGRESS

May 23, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC (AP) – Congress approved sweeping legislation, which provides new benefits for many Americans. The Americans with No Abilities Act (AWNAA), signed into law by President John Kerry shortly after its passage, is being hailed as a major victory by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition.

“Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society,” said Kerry, a longtime AWNA supporter. “This is why many of them voted for me. We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability to be ridiculed and passed over.
With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they do a better job, or have some idea of what they are doing”, said Kerry.

President Kerry pointed to the success of the US Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. Approximately 80 percent of postal employees lack job skills, making this agency the single largest US employer of Persons of Inability.

Private sector industries with good records of nondiscrimination against the Inept include retail sales (72%), the airline industry (68%),and home improvement “warehouse” stores (65%)

President Kerry has also set an example, personally selecting hundreds of non-able people for top government positions, including many cabinet-level jobs.

Under the Americans with No Abilities Act, more than 25 million “middle man” positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance.

Mandatory non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given, to guarantee upward mobility for even the most unremarkable employees. The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations which maintain a significant level of Persons of Inability in top positions, and gives a tax credit to small and medium businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires.

Finally, the AWNAA contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the non-able, banning discriminatory interview questions such as “Do you have any goals for the future?” or “Do you have any skills or experience which relate to this job?” and “Are you awake?”

“As a non-able person, I can’t be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them,” said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as a lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint, MI due to her lack of notable job skills. “This new law should really help people like me.”

With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of other untalented citizens can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. Said Kerry, “It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her adequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great society which I lead.”

Damn, that’s just close enough to the truth to be scary.

UPDATE, 9/17: Apparently it’s not a joke. (Via Ravenwood) At least not in England:

‘Hard-working’ job ad banned to protect the lazy

A businesswoman has been banned from asking for ‘hard-working’ staff in a job ad because it discriminates against the lazy.

Beryl King was told by a Jobcentre that her advert for warehouse workers discriminated against people who were not industrious.

Beryl, 57, told the Daily Mirror: “I couldn’t believe my ears. Has our world gone mad?

“I’ve been running my business for 27 years and it’s getting harder to find people who want to do a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.

“How long before someone says you can’t pay people for working because it discriminates against those on benefit who are paid for not working?”

Beryl, who owns two job agencies in Totton, Hants, offered £5.42 ($9.71) an hour for “warehouse packers who must be hard-working and reliable”.

The Southampton Jobcentre is investigating. A spokesman said: “Words such as ‘hardworking’ can be accepted if used with a clear job description.”

Yes, Ms. King. The world has gone mad. Completely batshit.

One Specifically for the Ladies

Connie du Toit has written an essay that all women ought to read. Unfortunately, the women who need to read this probably won’t come anywhere near this site. The (three) women who do read TSM regularly already know what she’s talking about. (Thank you, ladies.) So, gentlemen, point your mothers, daughters, and significant others at Connie’s essay, Fear Itself. And read it yourselves, too. Try to imagine living like she describes.

BTW, my wife agrees with her, too.

Boy, Gun Control Sure Works Great, Doesn’t It?

Reader Doug Sundseth sent me this short Reuter’s story, but first, a little background. Brazil just recently passed a registration and licensing law because they’re suffering from astronomical rates of homicide by firearm. The political knee-jerk reaction is, of course “It’s because of the guns!” The BBC reported in July

A law to ban the carrying of guns in public and control illegal ownership has come into effect in Brazil.

The law, passed by Congress in December, came into force on Friday after being signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

It will tighten rules on gun permits and create a national firearms register, with strict penalties for owning an unregistered gun.

So, how well is it working so far? Let’s see what Reuter-rooter reports:

Thieves Rob Bus Full of Policemen

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) – Forty-six Brazilian policemen traveling to a sports competition were caught with their guard down this week when four Brazilian thieves robbed the bus carrying them to the event.

The bus with 46 unarmed policemen from northeastern Paraiba state was headed to the city of Salvador in Bahia when two cars with armed robbers forced them to stop on the country’s main interstate highway on Tuesday.

“The robbers took their cameras, cellular phones, wallets and even the sports uniforms and sneakers,” a police spokesman said.

The suspects, who escaped, apparently did not know the bus was full of police when they stopped it, he said.

“We are looking for them, but I cannot say there’s any particular ardor here due to the fact that policemen have been robbed.”

Apparently nobody told the robbers that carrying an unregistered gun in public was a crime. Two crimes, actually.

D’OH!

Thanks, Doug. I needed the laugh.

“Accurate” Just not AUTHENTIC

According to Michael Medved, CBS just stated that the memos were “accurate.” Drudge reports just now:

Statement by the President of CBS News, Andrew Heyward: “We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television. There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know. Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that’s what we are doing.”

The announcement didn’t say anything about their obvious lack of authenticity. According to today’s NY Observer, Dan Rather is asking (begging) President Bush to “answer the questions.”

Tell you what, Dan: I’ll just forge some documents that “prove” you’re a serial child molester. I’ll get the unsworn testimony of some people who hate your guts and others who are your direct competitors – who, of course, I won’t name – and I’ll SWEAR that the documents are “accurate.” Let’s ignore the fact that they’re the centerpiece of my “proof.”

With all due respect, ANSWER THE QUESTIONS DAN. ANSWER THEM!

Bernie Goldberg was right. Arrogance. Pure, unadulterated arrogance.

UPDATE: Of course, I was beaten to the punch (barely) by the necktied professionals.
