Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot, 2009

So, as I said, I went to the 5th annual Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot last Saturday. Here’s just a little of what I saw there. To begin with, here’s the backstop with a pan over to the firing line:

On this end of the firing line was one of the baddest setups I have ever seen: a trailer set up for hosing down the countryside – Texan, of course! (Click the thumbnails for the huge images.)


I should have taken video of that 1919 – smoke was rolling off the barrel. It’s true: Happiness is a warm belt-fed! And yes, Virginia, the one in the middle is a mini-gun. I didn’t get any footage of it being fired, but trust me, it really does sound like God tearing a gigantic phone book!

The firing line was at least 100 yards wide, and there seemed to be at least one crew-served or belt-fed weapon at each position. Here are some examples:

His loader could have done his job a little better, but the gun worked fine!

I didn’t see the cannon fire, and yes, that’s a Henry Yellow Boy in the second shot. I told the shooter that if that went full-auto, I would be running in the opposite direction!

And then there was the more modern artillery:


The first two are 20mm, the third is a 30mm, and the last is a 37mm. (That big mortar fires bowling balls. There were at least two and maybe three of those.) Personally, I think everyone ought to own a field piece or two! Here’s that first 20mm cannon being fired:

And here are a couple of twin anti-aircraft mounts, with one guy taking shots at a model airplane being flown back and forth down the firing line:

The pilot lost a couple of aircraft, but generally they made it through unscathed. If you look close, you can see one in this clip:

There was also (I think) a Solothurn and a Lahti, but I didn’t get photos of those.

I had a good time, but I was only there a couple of hours. If you’re not pulling a trigger, there’s a limit to how much fun you can have.

The next shoot, I think, is in April. I may run back up to that one just to see if anyone brought anything new.

The raffle dinner is later this evening, and I’ll try to liveblog it. I’ll also try to get more photos, including some of Alan Gura, who is much younger than I imagined.

I’ll post about this again, but last night SayUncle asked a question about donating toward the legal fight for our rights, mentioning that he’d received emails from people saying they’d tried to donate during the Parker/Heller litigation and had been refused. Alan said that there had been a deliberate decision to take that case all the way without outside aid of any kind, which is why offers of assistance had been politely but firmly declined. However, all the current litigation, such as the Chicago incorporation suit and many others, are being paid for by the Second Amendment Foundation and CalGuns. If you want to help now, that’s where your money needs to go. I’ve been receiving solicitations from SAF for a while, but i did not know that they were the financiers of these efforts. They’ll be receiving donations from me in the future, and I hope from you as well.

It’s almost 4:00PM as I write this, so it’s time to head downstairs for dinner and the raffle. More blogging later, I hope.

Prepping for GBRIV

The Rendezvous starts in two (2) days. I’m leaving tomorrow morning at O-Dark-Thirty AM, and I plan on driving straight through. That should put me in Reno between 9 and 10 PM. I’ve decided to travel through Mordor California this year, at least on the way up. It should (I emphasize should) save me about an hour, and hopefully the scenery will be better than the sun-blasted landscape of Nevada has been these last three years.

On-line ticket sales for the Para GI Expert / Front Sight training certificate ended Saturday at midnight, or close to it. Total ticket sales, both at Soldiers’ Angels before PayPal went asshat, and after LuckyGunner.com was kind enough to pick up the gauntlet, came to (drumroll please): 449! After the 3% credit card processing fee (and PayPal’s cut), that means y’all have donated $4,355 to Project Valour IT. Thank you! With what we’ll add at the Rendezvous, Project Valour IT should be able to pick up several new systems!

The weather this year looks to be perfect, with daily highs of about 90 and evening lows in the upper 50’s. Perfect T-shirt weather, rather than the snow we got last year. And I own so many offensive, politically-incorrect T-shirts, it makes choosing which ones to take very difficult.

Speaking of choice, I’m still trying to decide what boomsticks to take with me. The Remington 700 5R (now with a NightForce scope in place of the Leupold) is a given, and one of the ARs, I think. The Garand, and I believe I’ll bring Baby Blue, too. (No .30 Carbine ammo to be had in Tucson. Oops. Perhaps I’ll bring Conan the Borg instead. It’s been a while since that one’s been out of the safe, and I have .22 ammo.) I’ll have to buy some ammo for her, though. I haven’t had a chance to reload for .30 Carbine yet. But I’ve got this new (to me) P14 Enfield I’ve yet to put a round through . . .

For handguns, my full-size Kimber upper is out getting the slide Gunkoted and some tritium night-sights installed. I hoped to have it back in time for the Rendezvous, but no. I think I’ll bring my S&W 25-13 Mountain Gun and some .45LC for it, but I’ll be leaving the companion Winchester 94 here. I might bring the Hi-Power, since I have the better part of a case of 124gr. NATO-spec Europellets. Of course, I’ll bring the Para Gun Blog 45, and the GI Expert I’m giving away. And last but not least, I think I’ll bring my Boomershoot pistol.

Anyway, I’ve got to do some running around, pick up some ammo, load some ammo, pack everything up, and then get to bed early. No posting tomorrow, probably – at least not until I get to Reno, and even then I’ll probably be too wiped to post more than “I’m here!” If you’re coming, I look forward to seeing you! 6:00pm. Leave the Silver Legacy Hospitality room to go to the ground floor to Gecko’s BBQ Restaurant for dinner.

6:00 pm. NSSF all you can eat pizza feed at the Silver Legacy Hospitality room. After dinner will be the fund raiser raffle for Project Valour-IT and the drawings for the door prizes.

Sunday, September 13th.

8:15am. Leave for the Virginia City Camel Races Festival and Cowboy Fast Draw Blogger Match.

9:00am – 10:00am. Cowboy Fast Draw Shooting.

The Cowboy Fast Draw shooting is the last scheduled event for the Gun Blogger Rendezvous, but many attendees will be staying Sunday night and returning home on Monday. The Camel Races Festival, The Reno Car Museum, the Downtown River Walk, the new Reno Museum, and a number of other things should be considered for the rest of the day on Sunday.

Note that many of the times shown are departure times. Plan on being there a little earlier than the departure time.

Now, on Saturday night we’re going to have the raffle drawings, and as you should know by now, we’re giving away the Para GI Expert that I’m donating and a $2,000 value training certificate to Front Sight that YOU NEED NOT BE PRESENT TO WIN. (The prizes are separate – two prizes, two winners.) So far we have sold about 175 tickets for these two prizes, and we still have a bit over two weeks to go before those sales stop.

I’ve lived in Arizona now for 28 years, moving here from Cary, NC in July of 1981. How did I not know about the bi-annual Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot? It’s been going on almost five years!

I don’t own any NFA items, but I will be the first person to tell you that full-auto hardware is the finest mechanism for turning large volumes of cash into noise and smiles. The next shoot is scheduled for October 16-18.

I’m going to the range.

I Can Haz .38 Super?

Well, I traded in a gun today. My Kimber Eclipse Pro II. Even with the new internal extractor slide I haven’t been all that happy with it, which is too bad because it’s too pretty not to shoot better than it did. It was NOT fond of my pet load that works flawlessly in my full-size Kimber Classic. And that load also works perfectly fine in my other Commander-size 1911, the Para Gun Blog .45.

Still, I’m a happy camper, because I traded it straight across for a brand spanking new EAA Witness Elite Match .38 Super.


Now I’ve got to accumulate more magazines, a fiber-optic front sight, holster, mag pouches, reloading dies and components, etc., etc., etc.

Should be a fun gun for steel shoots. Seventeen round magazines means a LOT fewer magazine changes.

Anybody got a pet load for the 124 grain Gold Dot?
