  1. One of the concepts he says — a few times — is one that we’ve been saying for some time: removing someone’s ability to speak their mind does not remove the ideas from their heads or hearts, and we as a society need to be able to say the unpopular things in order to really address them properly.

Or put another way, the solution to “hate speech” is not censorship, but more speech.

Racist and bigoted false ideas, if said in public, get challenged and disproven. But they must be said in order to be challenged.

OTOH, if saying those ideas is banned, then more often than not true ideas and observations regarding race are also banned.

Censoring truth is never good for society, even when done with good intentions. That goes double for uncomfortable truths.

    1. What may be even worse, forbidding speech can drive these “dark thoughts” underground, giving them an air of “forbidden knowledge” even when they are false, and enabling those who believe these things to get more support than they otherwise would get.

And then there’s the absurdity of being unable to debunk these claims because even the mere bringing up the claims to debunk is forbidden!

It is my understanding that “far right” movements in Germany have been able to gain traction by banning pro-Nazi sentiments because, after this banning, candidates who have friends and family, who before would freely share their unsavory thoughts about things, would taint these candidates, preventing them from getting traction … but now that these friends and family are forced to keep quiet, the taint goes away.

Yes, I cannot help but think this “tainting” is unfair, but ultimately, it’s up to the voters to decide what to do with the information they get! And if they can’t get certain information, right or wrong, they cannot use it to make decisions (whether those decisions be informed or misinformed).

  2. I’m not sure if the creator of this documentary is quite there, but he’s very close to being there: the best way to get rid of racism real or perceived is to ignore race altogether and focus on the individual and his or her wants, needs, fears, abilities, and limitations — and do everything in your power to help that individual to thrive! (Or to bring that particular individual to justice, as the case may be.)

The smallest minority is the individual, after all!

Also, I liked how this individual disagreed with Nigel Farage, but didn’t demonize him or discredit him as a “racist” — he seems to be learning the right things!
