Definitely NOT a Nazi symbol, the Jerusalem Cross:

DEFINITELY a Nazi symbol, the Totenkopf:

Everybody up to speed? The top one is bad because a Republican has it tattooed on his chest. The bottom one, tattooed on a Democrat, is just a drunken weekend. Nothing to see here. Move along.
MOVE ALONG!
True, the Nazis did adopt the Totenkopf but the Germans were using it long before they came on the scene.

Strictly speaking, it’s a symbol of Prussian militarism as much as it of the Gestapo and the death camps.
I know it’s being referred to as a totenkopf, but I haven’t seen a pic of it. Are we sure it’s not just one of the various forms of skull and crossbones?
Okay, nevermind – was definately a totenkopf:

Nothing wrong with skulls … sort of …

As a point of recognition, the SS skull has a lower jaw and the eye sockets are squared off (which distinguishes human eye sockets from the great apes which all have circular eye sockets) like this one:

The Panzertruppe collar tabs which also use a skull has no lower jaw and the eye sockets are round:

But yes, that skull that Kevin illustrates is an SS cloth cap badge copy and very close to the cast metal ones which are basically the same design and less amenable to a flat reproduction (as a tattoo, for example).
